National Funding Announces the Upsize of Their Bank Credit Facility and the Issuance of Corporate Notes

SAN DIEGO, Calif. October 12, 2021 – National Funding, Inc., one of the largest U.S. specialty finance companies serving small- and medium-sized businesses, announced the recent renewal and upsize of a $60.0 million senior secured warehouse line of credit. The facility, which includes an accordion to expand to $75.0 million, was provided by a prominent U.S.-based commercial bank. The facility will continue to be used by the Company to fund new originations and support additional growth of the platform.

Concurrent with the transaction, National Funding also secured a $55.0 million investment-grade rated corporate note financing provided by a consortium of institutional investors. The transaction was assigned a BBB+ rating by a nationally recognized statistical ratings organization. Having closed this additional financing, National Funding is well positioned to support its partners and enhances the Company’s ability to take advantage of significant market opportunities.

To date, National Funding has provided more than $4.3 billion in working capital and equipment leasing for more than 75,000 small- to medium-sized businesses nationwide.

National Funding on Growing its Team to Prepare for the Bull Run of 2022

national funding office“We’re about people and platforms,” President of National Funding Joe Gaudio said. “PP: People and platforms, not PPP, that’s my little acronym.”

National Funding is back and looking to hire fresh talent, rebuilding their team after the pandemic rolled through the California market.

“Whether it was California or if we resided in another state, it impacted small business owners throughout the country,” Gaudio said. “Small businesses took a big impact. A significant number of customers requested temporary relief loan modifications. And that’s how the PPP program helped bridge that gap for a lot of small business owners, and get them through the pandemic.”

Gaudio said that National Funding was affected like every peer firm was by the pullback, explaining that their normal customer was looking for PPP funding, not a bridge loan. National rolled back their team by about 50%, and rolled back funding for several months. After the worst of it had passed by the end of the summer, National was back, strictly pulling the reigns but still going. Now they are hiring in every department, and Gaudio said nothing is stopping a gigantic 2022 rebound of demand. Benjamin Flowers as CTO and Luca Marseglia to the Data Science Division are just the beginning.

“We’re rescaling, we’re hiring quite a bit this year, and so these two hires are part of our rescaling: rebuilding not only the leadership team, but the rest of the organization,” Gaudio said. “We’re always looking for new high performers and contributors that that fit into our culture. Even pre-pandemic: if you’re an A-player, you’re a high performer, and you can add value, we will take a look at you, we will find room for you.”

National believes the coming year will unleash tremendous pent-up demand, Gaudio said. In the short term, the firm plans to offer intermediate financing to help SMBs handle the bumps on the way. Though there will be some supply chain, labor, and schooling/childcare problems next year, it will still be big, and National has been preparing, working at the office the whole way through.

“That’ll still continue to put somewhat of a cap on the recovery for small business owners, but we expect a big year in 2022,” Gaudio said. “We’ve embraced the hybrid model for certain functions, [but] sales and operations, underwriting: we’re 100% back in the office, and we’ve been like that since last July. It’s important to our culture to be together… I just continue to be very bullish about the future, and I think it’ll be exciting to see the continued evolution of our industry and the platforms.”

National Funding Announces New President

This announcement comes just weeks after National Funding acquired QuickBridge, another alternative lender based in California.

Prior to joining National Funding, Gaudio was the CEO of Superior Mobile Medics for five years. He led the sale of the company to Quest Diagnostics and then served as part of the integration of the acquisition for Quest.

“Since joining National Funding in 2017, Joseph has helped propel the company to one of the top 10 alternative SMB lenders in the nation, and has been a driving force during our rapid growth,” Gilbert said. “Joseph’s strategic thinking capabilities, strong business acumen and his more than a decade of industry experience geared towards the small to medium business market provides critical firepower as we build National Funding into the leading brand serving the financial needs of Main Street America.”

National Funding Promotes Justin Thompson

National Funding has also made two additions to support the growth of Strategic Partnerships. Jason Osiecki, previously Head of Sales for QuickBridge, has been named Vice President, Strategic Partnership for National Funding. He will be tasked with driving growth opportunities in the merchant processing, leasing, B2C, Lender Decline and other markets. And Kevin Kane has been appointed as Director of Business Alliances. He will manage day-to-day relationships with brokers across the country.

National Funding Acquires QuickBridge

National Funding announced today that it has purchased QuickBridge. The two companies will combine back-end resources, including advanced technology, innovation and product development, but they will continue to operate independently, as separate brands. Ben Gold, QuickBridge’s founding President, will remain in his current post and will work closely with National Funding founder and CEO Dave Gilbert.

“QuickBridge has an unbelievable front end system that knows how to underwrite small businesses extremely efficiently,” Gilbert told deBanked.

Gilbert also said he was particularly interested in QuickBridge’s 10 year loan product.

National Funding was a minority interest owner in QuickBridge since the company’s founding in 2011, so this acquisition was essentially a buyout of five other partners.

In addition to the technology, Gilbert said QuickBridge’s people and its headquarters in Irvine, California were elements that made it very appealing.

“There’s a lot of great talent in Orange county and there are a lot of finance companies out there, so it’s going to be a great recruiting hub,” Gilbert said.

Given the high quality pool of talent, Gilbert said he believes he can scale QuickBridge quickly. Together, National Funding and QuickBridge have provided more than $3 billion in financing to small and mid-sized businesses and their combined overall financing volume will exceed $600 million this year, according to National Funding. QuickBridge has been recognized in recent years for its rapid rise, including year-over-year double or triple digit percentage growth.

The way that both companies get business is slightly different. Gilbert said that QuickBridge derives 75 percent of its business from ISOs and 25 percent from direct marketing, whereas National Funding’s ratio is the inverse, with a sizable direct sales team.

In addition to QuickBridge’s headquarters in Irvine, it also has a small satellite office in New York, which will remain. Of the company’s roughly 100 employees, Gilbert said that virtually all of them will stay on. Founded by Gilbert in 1999, National Funding is based in San Diego and employs roughly 230 people.

National Funding Deploys $1.5B, Beefs up Automated Underwriting

California-based small business lender National Funding said that it has deployed $1.5 billion in capital, funding small businesses with short-term working capital loans. 

The 17-year-old company funded $152 million in loans in the half of 2016, up 45 percent from the same period last year. The company’s customers include general contractors, medical services and trucking companies that average about $1 million in sales annually.

While 80 percent of the loans are for working capital, the company has seen demand for equipment leasing slowly resurge after the financial crisis. “After 2008, the market turned negative in LA and we had to shrink our company,” said CEO Dave Gilbert.

The company is also preparing for a technology overhaul, trying to get access to data pools to automate underwriting. “We need to be tech driven,” he said. “As deals get smaller, we need to automate them to make it affordable.”

National Funding generates 25 percent of its loan volume through brokers. “Given everything that’s happening in the industry, a lot of lenders will be forced to become balance sheet lenders,” he said.

The company hired Geoff Howard from Intuit to lead its technology efforts and aims to automate underwriting for 40 percent of its deals, doubling up from its present rate of 20 percent.

The average size of its loans is $50,000 and the company also plans to launch its first long-term loan product later this year.
