Decent analysis today in your email today Sean about OnDeck. http://debanked.com/2015/02/more-red-for-ondeck-ondk/ I would make some modifications to your assessments. With 200 million in the bank, why shouldn't OnDeck continue to focus on growth? Why slow down to book paper profits when it's completely unnecessary to continue building out infrastructure, collecting data, and tweaking their algorithms? OnDeck went public to fuel additional growth and capture more of the market. They could slow down and book profits, but why do that when they have the opportunity to become the largest business lender in the country?

I get your point. I think that sometimes when you take a step back though it seems like so far the only thing a few lenders are proving is that they can make tons and tons of loans. Their rates get cheaper, the terms get longer, volume keep multiplying. And so far they haven't made any money doing it... and these are the good times. What will happen in the bad times?
I can't imagine a scenario where there's a new regulatory threat or sharp economic downtown where they can just slow down growth and play it lowkey for a bit while generating profits. What if we hit a 5 year recession where credit dries up and there's no buyers on the their MarketPlace?
It can't be growth at a loss forever can it? Because what happens when there are losses due to real issues rather than as a byproduct of rapid expansion?
The endgame has to be about making money and being sustainable, not just about being able to make tons of loans. Or do I have that wrong?Last edited by sean bash; 02-25-2015, 01:03 AM.

I think the fact of the matter is that OnDeck and other lenders have barely even scratched the bottom of the potential market. Compared to the marketshare they have versus the potential, it might as well only be their first month in business. You're looking at this like this is the end when it is only the beginning.
