On December 17, 2018, the owner of a mexican restaurant in Springfield, Illinois, is alleged to have submitted altered bank statements to National Funding, Inc as part of a loan application to obtain $35,000. Yes, it's real. DOJ says the investigation was carried out by the FDIC. The indictment referred to both companies as "mortgage lenders," not banks or online lenders. It also said that the merchant applied to National Funding for a "restaurant loan" of $35,000. National Funding is a small business lender.
