In January of 2015, Prosper acquired Salt Lake city-based online lender American Healthcare Lending: Prosper's acquisition. American Healthcare Lending was a niche lender that targeted elective medical procedures that are in-demand but typically not covered by insurance (e.g., bariatric surgery, fertility treatment, cosmetic surgery, cosmetic dentistry. Prosper's website is still kicking: Prosper Healthcare.
I seem to recall that this acquisition didn't work out too well for Prosper and that they laid off most of their SLC employees. I wonder if Lending Club joined the foray into this space at the same time Prosper was entering. I would be interested to find out what type of impact these efforts have had on customer acquisition. I'd be even more interested to analyze the loans originated this way and view their relative performance.
