Google News Redesign Sucks

Not even clearing my cookies can restore Google News to its old format...  I am extremely angry at Google, today.  They have stripped out all of the URLs in news results, making it impossible to gauge the source based upon anything but Google's attribution.  And they are now "fact-checking" ("let us be the arbiters of Truth") for the masses, through a bunch of idiotic "authorities" that they have somehow chosen.

Assholes.  Total fucking assholes @ GOOGL.

Where do I go for news aggregation, now?

Maybe Yahoo will now steal Google's old layout - just as Google has today stolen Yahoo's layout.

Is there a SCHOLAR.NEWS.GOOGLE.COM or something?  Can people who can read opt out of this clunky, large-font, picture-heavy, time-sucking bullshit?  ................... So angry.

"Cut down on clutter" = "Show only preferred headline" / "force more user interaction/clicks" / "satisfy loser, nerd 'data scientist' idiots"

I'm not a fan either ... especially on a wide monitor. We will see what feedback they give and if they add multiple columns back.  I'll be looking at other aggregation news sites too.

Agreed. The new format is actually unusable.

Thank you.  I am resistant to change - and a curmudgeon by nature - so I am glad to see, at least, that it was "not just me".

It's horrible UX design;  looks and feels as though being forced into using a giant, non-responsive mobile version, on desk...

About one out of every 10 times I clear cookies and navigate to news.google.com, it gives me the old layout - keeping open.

ETA:  Oh, goodie - Ars Technica article's comments section is 100% "I hate it, [insert critique]" - maybe they'll roll shit back...

It's a giant AI training machine... In stupid fucking google, news reads you.  No wonder the EU is regulating these guys.  I see inability to drill down into a keyword - and only into a predefined "topic" - and I think, oh, what I see is being limited, so I can be the human captcha to train the "what does and does not belong in this topic" algorithm.  Goddamit.  Is nothing sacred?  I am becoming very tired of this shit.

Silicon Valley is due for a giant backlash.

I miss most the functionality to query by keyword, then sort by most recent, then show duplicates.  This process is now completely opaque and whatever story the algorithm might pick as 'authoritative' or 'representative' for a particular 'topic' (not a keyword, have to go through "Full Coverage" for a particular 'topic') is what is served, with no way to show/hide duplicates or do direct keyword queries and see, as an example, how widely a particular story has been dispersed / what outlets picked it up / what edgecase stories which are relevant (though not picked up as 'topical' by the algorithm) may have also appeared --- all stuff which can only be surfaced by humans doing KW queries...

I would box the engineers responsible about the ears - and send them back to fix everything that they've broken in the name of "design".

Fundamentally, a search company has now taken "news" and begun "curating" it (they will hide behind "the algorithm curates it", as they always do, but it is "curation" nevertheless).  Philosophically, that's about half-a-goose-step away from "censorship" dressed up as curation.

The search company has disabled/removed the ability for users to search through the news it aggregates.  I find that very troubling...

TravelingPennies

Yup.  Here it is, the justification for breaking something that works --- in order to shove some crap, that doesn't, down our throats:

Adult supervision is required at Google News.  Idiots running it...

Seems like the old feed style is back on Google News.

Not for me - what do you see? I'm still having to use a... trick... to access the old news, in the old way, on my old desktop.  I guess I'm old.

But the upside of that is that it allows me to issue fortune-cookie-like proclamations, as above, where I say Google is due for a backlash...
